Most film if properly cared for, can actually last far longer than the machinery on which it is played. Still, we constantly see film pulled from storage in a state of advanced decay, rendering the materials unusable.

Digital technology today makes the recovery of such cases much more feasable than ever before. We can make enhancements to picture quality (sharpness, colour shift, brightness, contrast, saturation, balance, RGB colour strengths, etc) as well as improvements to the audio too. Digital Restoration:
Examples of image enhancements include changes in respect of sharpness, colour shift, brightness, contrast, saturation, balance and RGB colour strengths.

Today's audio software can perform amazing feats to restore and enhance audio clips i.e to remove background noise and hiss from recordings or make pops and clicks from vinyl records disappear.

Physical Cleaning of Cine Film:
Any film that you require to be cleaned will be wound through lint-free cloth which is soaked in a specialist cleaning agent to remove as much grease and dirt as possible, leaving the emulsion cleaner. The cost of doing so would be £50 per hr. Typically, we can handle about 400ft in 20 mins.

Causes of Damage:
Moisture can be absorbed directly from the air. This causes a chemical reaction called binder hydrolysis. Molecules in the recording and backing layers react with the moisture and break down, leaving a sticky residue. Eventually the tape becomes too sticky to use. Binder hydrolysis is the factor most experts use in predicting the life expectancy of magnetic tape.

Storage environments must be cool, dry, clean and relatively stable to maintain tape in good condition. Proper storage can extend tape life by years or even decades. If you are having problems playing back some of your tapes, you should consider taking action now before additional tapes deteriorate.

During the transfer itself, we can even digitally remaster and repair your film as it transfers it to DVD. The benefit to you is a dramatic improvement in both the visual and audio quality.

This is especially important with older tapes that have suffered over time in respect of a slight fading for example.
